Martin Narey, who is retiring as Chief Executive of Barnardo's reflects on the experience of childhood in the UK, with a focus on young people suffering disadvantage as a result of poverty, lack of social mobility and the links between child poverty and criminal activity. How can we ensure greater equality of opportunity for children in the UK, how important is income and what is the role for government and the voluntary sector in tackling socio-economic disadvantage? Martin Narey joined Barnardo's in 2005. He has a deep and passionate concern for disadvantaged young people and it is this thread which brought him to Barnardo's which, under his watch, has once again become the UK's biggest children's charity. He has led the organisation through a period of sustained growth and has significantly improved its influencing capacity, changing government policy on issues such as children in care, asylum seeking children, vocational education and the supervision of child sex offenders. But Barnardo's primary campaigning issue while he has been CEO has been child poverty. In this, his final address before stepping down, Martin offers his reflections after five stimulating years at the charity.
